James L. Alexander, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management and Coordinator of Practicum Services at the Texas A&M University System, School of Rural Public Health. He teaches the school’s Core Course in Health Policy & Management and co-teaches the Capstone Leadership course for the MHA students. He is a former CEO of several small rural hospitals in Texas and a founder of the Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals (TORCH). Dr. Alexander continues to be active in rural health and economic issues from water and wind farms to genetically modified crops. He works closely with TORCH on developing post-graduate residency positions for new MHA graduates. Dr. Alexander is primary author of the chapter on Injury and Violence Prevention in Rural Areas in “Rural Healthy People 2010: A companion Document to Healthy People 2010” He was Principle Investigator in a national research project on The State of Rural Health Provider Organizations and Health Professional Shortages. Dr. Alexander is on the Board of Directors of the Brazos Valley Area Health Education Center, Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, and the Board of Directors of Burleson County Hospital District. He received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Texas and his Ph.D. from the University of Houston. He resides in Caldwell with his wife Liz, enjoys outdoor activities, to include gardening, hunting and camping.
