Craig H. Blakely, PhD, MPH, is a professor of health care policy in the Department of Health Care Policy and Management at the Texas A&M School of Rural Public Health.  He is also the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research at the school and the Associate Director of the Public Policy Research Institute at Texas A&M University.   Dr. Blakely’s research interests have been varied, but have always focused on disenfranchised or underserved population including pregnant women – particularly those without access to health care, juvenile delinquents, substance abusers, and more recently, rural populations.  He has on occasion successfully championed legislative change affecting underserved populations.  Dr. Blakely has been principle investigator of grants totaling more than $13 million in expenditures.  He has published numerous works including a book A Pound of Prevention: The Case for Universal Maternity Care in the US published by the American Public Health Association that was an early bible for those advocating universal access to maternity care in the United States. 

Blakely’s research on maternal and child health includes several major state-wide studies of immunization and focuses on several cross cutting subject areas including substance abuse prevention, maternal and child health, and community-based change.  He has evaluated major initiatives such as a community-based substance abuse prevention program service a seven county region, a school-based prevention program targeting at-risk youth, an early state supported maternal and chi ld health care program that provided services to non-US citizen residents, Medicaid managed care rollouts as well as major workers’ compensation reforms in Texas.  Dr. Blakely has served on numerous review panels, regularly reviews papers for a number of journals and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Primary Prevention.  Dr. Blakely, obtained his BS degree from the University of Illinois, an MA degree from Southern Illinois University, his PhD degree from Michigan State University in Ecological Psychology, and an MPH from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.
