Dr. Johnson is an associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management, as well as the Director of the Masters of Health Administration Program. He is trained as an organization theorist who examines how organization structure impacts health care quality. He is best known for research examining the relationships between organization structure on quality and litigation within the long-term care setting. Dr. Johnson has done research examining the quality of care in nursing homes serving veterans, Florida residents, and across the nation. Finally, he has examined quality and information technology relationships within medical group practices and academic health centers.
His research has been funded by numerous sources, including the National Science Foundation, US Administration on Aging, Agency for Healthcare Research on Quality, The Commonwealth Fund, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Department of Veterans Affairs, and numerous state contracts. Dr. Johnson received an AHRQ dissertation grant in 1997, an Extendicare Faculty Fellowship award in 1999, was a co-recipient for papers of the year awards in 2000 (National Institute for Health Care Management Research and Educational Foundation) and 2001 (Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy). He was also one of the first non-clinicians to receive a Merit Review Entry Program Career Development Award in 2002 from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. in Health Services Research, Policy, and Administration with a Ph.D. minor in Business Administration (organization theory concentration) from the University of Minnesota in 1998.
